Nap-Naps Frequently Asked Questions

About Cloth Nappies | Frequently Asked Questions | How They Work | Washing and Care | Why choose Nap-Naps?

How Many Nap-Naps will I need?

This depends entirely on how often you choose to wash your Nap-Naps cloth nappies. If you have approx 12 Nap-Naps you will need to wash every day. Example: 6 for the day & 6 spare for the next day. If you have approx 18-24 Nap-Naps (most common & easiest choice) you can wash every 2 or 3 days. Example: 6 for the day, 12 in the wash & 6 spare.

What size Nap-Nap will I need?

Nap-Nap's awesome design is One Size Fits All, taking your little bundle from baby to toddler so you don't have to spend more money as baby grows. (Most other cloth nappy systems are size appropriate so you have to buy bigger sizes as baby grows). For the first few months using the newborn fold, Nap-Naps have excess material at the front. Simply folding this over means that you not only have extra protection in the front, but also have a far more convenient and cost effective nappy system that can be used from newborn through to toddler size.

Are the overpants one size fits all like the cloth nappies?

Nap-Naps overpants are size appropriate however, there are only 4 sizes (Newborn 4-6kg, Small 6-10kg, Medium 10-14kg and Large 14-16+kg). Most people choose to use around 3-4 overpants per size. Our customers love the flexibility of our 'wrap' style as it allows for more variance in leg and waist sizing.

What are Nap-Naps made of?

‘Classic’ or ‘Day’ Nap-Naps: The Inner Liner and inside lining is 100% natural cotton flannelette and the coloured outer is a polyester/viscose mix. We chose the outer because of its very high thread count and extreme durability. It is in fact the same material used for corporate bank and school uniforms (we all know how long a school uniform can last)! ‘Night’ Nap-Naps: Made from 100% thick & thirsty cotton toweling in a soft velour finish. ‘All in One’ Nap-Naps: The Inner Liner and inside lining is 100% natural cotton flannelette and the coloured outer is 100% polyester with a PUL lining. Nap-Naps Overpants: Either 100% polyester with a PUL lining for its excellent waterproofing quality or you have the option of our Organic Woolen overpants for those who choose wool. All Nap-Naps products are made with careful attention to detail and using highest quality materials with the view to be absorbent, protective, comfortable and lasting.

Can we throw Nap-Naps in the dryer?

Absolutely! ‘Classic’ Nap-Naps can be dried either by line or in the dryer. Our customers tell us that Nap-Naps dry faster than other fitted nappies, which is so important in New Zealand weather conditions! ‘All in One’ Nap-Naps can be dried either by line or in the dryer as well, but choose the low/medium setting.

Can we throw Nap-Naps Overpants in the dryer?

Nap-Naps Overpants are conveniently separate so they can be rinsed and line dried, however they can be placed in the dryer on the low/medium setting. Organic wool Overpants should only be line dried in the shade.

How many Overpants do we need?

The average amount of overpants per size seems to be 3-4. Sometimes you will change the overpants after every 3rd or 4th change, sometimes you will change the overpants every time. It depends on baby's wetting etc and also depends on personal preference. We are proud to say that our overpant material doesn't have that classic 'plastic pants' smell because it's not plastic. The unique PUL lining of the fabric makes the overpants breathable and protective. Simply rinse the overpants in the laundry tub and hang them on the line to dry in a flash. Organic Woolen overpants come with complete washing and care instructions along the lines of gentle hand washing every other week and when purchased you will be provided with the unique properties of wool and it’s awesome self cleansing system.

Do I have to use Overpants with my Nap-Naps?

Nap-Naps ‘Classic’ and ‘Night’ cloth nappies are made entirely from cloth, absorbent fabric and the overpants are the waterproof protective layer that ensures clothing/bedding stays dry. We designed them to be conveniently separate so that you only need 3-4 overpants regardless of how many Nap-Naps you are using instead of having what is commonly referred to as an AIO (All In One) where the waterproof fabric is attached to the cloth nappy. Most people use an overpant about 80% of the time depending on lifestyle. Certainly when baby is wearing clothes out and about and in bed at night, then they will need an overpant. However, our babes have always run around without an overpant on, especially in the warmer months and at night after a bath. That’s the beauty of Nap-Naps cloth nappies, they are fitted and shaped like a throw away nappy so they can be worn without an overpant when suitable, and baby remains leak free. When baby is wearing a Nap-Nap without an overpant you will feel when the Nap-Nap needs changed as it becomes damp. Our ‘All in One’ design does not require an overpant, as the breathable/waterproof fabric forms the outside part of the nappy.

How do we wash Nap-Naps?

Click the washing and care tab above to refer to our detailed instructions. As an alternative to regular washing powders, and as a more natural approach, use ½ cup of white vinegar (natural antiseptic /antibacterial) and 2-3 drops of tea tree oil (natural antibacterial/antifungal). There are also now a number of companies offering chemical free washing powders which can be used, however it is important to use only half the recommended amount to avoid build up of residue on the nappy. Do not use Fabric Softeners (coats the fibres and makes them less absorbent) or Chlorine Bleach (too harsh on nappies and on babies skin) on Nap-Naps Cloth Nappies or Overpants.

How do we maximise absorbency in our new Nap-Naps?

Soak Nap-Naps & night boosters overnight in a laundry tub or large bucket surrounded by lots of COLD water, weigh them down if they float on top, then COLD machine wash & hang them on the line to dry completely. Repeat once, twice or even three times before use! No laundry powders required. Just like a new towel, this pre-washing will maximise absorbency Please note that your Nap-Naps will probably become covered in fluff. Don't panic, this will wash off after a few washes & wears, it's just the excess coming off the flannelette. Pre-wash Night Boosters in a Laundry Bag. Microfleece Liners can be prewashed before use, but no soaking is required.

Do I just remove the middle liner and wash it?

The entire Nap-Nap is washable and the Inner Liner is attached for your convenience. Nap-Naps are fitted cloth nappies, cleverly designed using elastic and hook and loop to ensure a snug and comfortable fit for baby. The shaped inner liner means no leaks making it even easier to use cloth. Gone are the days of complicated folding and pins. Nap-Naps are shaped like a throw away nappy without the environmental, health or financial impacts.

Do we have to use the separate microfleece Liners?

Not at all. We developed liners as part of the Nap-Nap cloth nappies product range to cater to those who like to use liners. They are great for catching poo as they are synthetic and waste simply drops off into the loo or rinses easily. The theory behind using synthetic materials as liners is that urine goes through and is soaked up by the cloth underneath rather than sitting against baby's skin. This suggests that there is a problem with wet cloth against baby's skin. Not true. Wet cloth doesn't cause nappy rash. Diet, health, chemicals and length of time between changes create nappy rash! When a baby is teething for example, their body becomes more acidic and this can sometimes affect their urine regardless of the nappy system used. Our experience is that half the people love using liners and the other half don't bother. It's a personal choice. We now offer Flushable Biodegradable Liners which are preferred by those cloth nappy users who want to lift and flush poo down the loo. See our Nap-Naps Accessories range for more information.

What can I use if my baby gets Nappy Rash?

Most babies will experience nappy rash at some point during their time in nappies however, please don't be fooled, cloth nappies do not cause nappy rash. See our Cloth Facts for more information. ECO STORE have a fantastic Nappy Balm. WELEDA do a great Calendula Cream and a Nappy Rash Cream. LUCAS Paw Paw Ointment is a great barrier. Ensure you are not using any chemicals when washing your Nap-Naps. Click the tab above to refer to our detailed Washing and Care Instructions. Baby's love time without cloth nappies on. The freedom of no nappies and letting plenty of air get to those cute wee bums does wonders for nappy rash. For more serious concerns, see your local natural health specialist or family practitioner.

How many Nap-Naps will my baby use in one day?

Of course this varies from baby to baby and will change from newborn to toddler. On average a newborn baby will use approx 6-8 cloth nappies per day and this changes depending on whether baby is breastfed or bottle fed, how many motions they are having etc. Some baby's poo several times a day and others every 3 or 4 days. This can change according to Mums diet (if a baby is breastfed) and will change when a baby goes onto solid foods. Some baby's wet a lot and others a little. This can change depending on the weather. A baby in the summer who is drinking a lot may wet or may sweat it all out. A baby in the winter may not be as thirsty but may eat more. You can see there are many different scenarios and all babies are so different. The general rule of thumb is simply change your baby’s cloth nappies when he/she is wet and as soon as possible if he/she has poo in his/her nappies. Everyone has different methods for checking and you will develop your own. If in doubt, check by popping a hand down the back/front of the Nap-Nap, inside the overpant and on the outside of the cloth nappy. If it feels damp they need changing. If you are changing from using throw away nappies the transition can be rather different as throw away nappies don’t tend to get that wet feeling. Rest assured, this will not harm your baby. Generally, cloth nappies need changing more often than throw away nappies OR is it that throw away nappies actually should be changed more often? The benefits of cloth nappies far outweigh the frequency in which to change your babies Nap-Naps.

Can I use Nap-Naps Overnight?

Absolutely! You can choose to use our ‘Night’ Nap-Naps cloth nappies at night time which are made from 100% cotton towelling for when baby needs a little bit more. These can be used with Night Boosters as well if you have a babe who super soaks under the stars! If you have ‘Classic’ or ‘All in One’ Nap-Naps, you can use them with Night Boosters which are super thick & thirsty 100% cotton towelling for night or when you want to lengthen time between changing ie. you are off out shopping and not sure where you might find a place to change your baby, you can put 1 or even 2 Boosters underneath the Inner Liner to maximise absorbency. Boy baby's tend to wet more at the front and our customers like to boost their cloth nappies more at the front to allow for this. Girls baby's tend to wet more in the middle and therefore, boosters can be used in the middle to maximise absorbency and ensure a leak free sleep. Many of our customers say they love Nap-Naps because they can use them at night, especially the Night Nap-Naps range, even after trying other nappies and not having any luck. We are especially proud of this!
