Wool is the natural fibre that science cannot match for its versatility, practicality and superiority. Scientists have not been able to produce a material that can duplicate all of the properties of wool.
Organic wool provides comfort in both hot and cold weather since it is so breathable and can absorb up to 30 percent of its own weight in moisture before it becomes really damp, compared to 1-2% for acrylic and polyester fibres. While wool can absorb moisture, it repels large quantities of liquid. The scales on the outside of the fibre, called the epicuticle, cause liquids to roll off the surface of the wool fabric.
Wool is so comfortable to wear because its elasticity means garments fit well and yield to body movement. This snug fit means when wool is used as a cover over a nappy it creates a micro-climate. This increases the efficiency of the body’s heating/cooling mechanism by drawing away moisture (urine and perspiration) and dissipating it. Because of this, the amount of energy the baby expends to maintain body temperature is reduced which can lead to both baby and parents sleeping for longer (and you thought counting sheep was a myth!)
Wool is naturally static resistant so no nasty shocks that you may get with synthetic fleece wraps.
What makes wool organic?
Just as with organic food, organic wool is grown without the use of harmful chemicals. “Organic sheep” do not receive routine chemical treatments such as drenching, dipping, antibiotics, growth hormones or vaccines. Organic sheep are bred and fed outdoors on special pastures, which are never sprayed with herbicides, to build healthy immune systems. Farms need to be free from nasty chemicals for at least three years before they can be certified organic and this is why Natural Parenting have searched extensively to find a quality organic wool. Natural Parenting Wool products are made from organic wool that has been produced in New Zealand on a farm that has been certified organic since 1986.
Did you know the first Sheep were brought to New Zealand by Captain Cook in 1773? The Merino is the oldest and most numerous breed in the world. Today there are just over 2 million Merino sheep being farmed in New Zealand. Most Merinos are found in the rugged South Island hill country, where it is the only breed able to thrive on the high altitude pastures of native grass. Despite a heavy fleece, they are fairly small and hardy. Because of the amazing properties of their fleece they are able to survive the harsh snow covered high country pastures in winter but are just as comfortable in the dry heat of summer on the Canterbury plains.
A Merino sheep grows 3.5 to 5 kg of wool every year making wool fibre a renewable resource. Merinos have a very dense fleece - about 50 million fibres - nearly three times as many as other breeds - making organic merino wool super fine, soft, non-irritating and perfect for against your baby’s delicate skin.
