Washing and Care

About Cloth Nappies | Frequently Asked Questions | How They Work | Washing and Care | Why choose Nap-Naps?

Please the read following instructions carefully before use:

Pre washing instructions:

Simply throw your new Nap-Naps into your laundry tub or a bath of cold water. Weigh them down if they float on top, and ensure there is lots of surrounding water so colour doesn’t run. This soaking helps to open up the cotton fibres. Soak overnight and then spin cycle them in the washing machine to remove excess water. Hang them on the line and dry completely. Repeat once, twice or even three times before use. Just like a new towel, this pre washing will maximise absorbency. Please note that your Nap-Naps will probably become covered in fluff, it’s OK, this will wash off after a few washes and wears, it’s just the excess coming off the flannelette.

Night Boosters: Pre wash ‘Night Boosters’ in a laundry bag or separately due to the excess fluff that initially comes off.

Liners: If you are using ‘Washable Liners’ pre wash these (no soaking required). Flushable Biodegradable Liners are also available in packs of 100

PUL Overpants: Do not pre soak. Pre wash Overpants to remove any manufacturing residue. Machine wash cold, medium or hot (up to 60 degrees). Line dry or tumble dry low/medium.

How to wash:

All Nap-Naps washing and care instructions can be found on the sewn in label of your purchase.

Machine wash cold, medium or hot (up to 40 degrees). Line dry or tumble dry low/medium.

Avoid excessive use of soaking products, as consistently used, have shown over time to eat into the fabric, destroying the quality of your cloth nappies. Use only as required.

As an alternative to regular washing powders, and as a more natural approach, use ½ cup of white vinegar (natural antiseptic/antibacterial) and 2-3 drops of tea tree oil (natural antibacterial/antifungal). There are also now a number of companies offering chemical free washing powders which can be used, however it is important to use only half the recommended amount to avoid build up of residue on the nappy.

Do not use Fabric Softeners (Coats the fibres and makes them less absorbent) or Chlorine Bleach (Too harsh on nappies and on babies skin) on Nap-Naps or Overpants.

Excessive use of barrier creams containing beeswax and oils (natural and synthetic) will result in a gradual build up on the fabric of your nappies, making them waterproof, and hence non absorbent.

How to dry:

It’s as easy as hanging your Nap-Naps on the line with the natural sunshine acting as a whitener and brightener, or throwing them all in the dryer, or inside on a clothesline. Avoid hanging Nap-Naps from the Inner Liner.

Storing:

Once you have changed baby, simply put your Nap-Nap, Liner and Night Boosters into a nappy bucket. Remove any waste by putting it into the toilet or rinsing in your laundry tub. It is easiest to ‘dry pail’ your Nap-Naps. Put them into a nappy bucket without any water or sanitisers. It is an effective way of storing your Nap-Naps until there is enough to wash and it means heavy, water filled buckets aren’t a hazard to children. We recommend that you fold the two Velcro side tabs in half so they don’t gather fluff during the wash and stick together. If you don’t, it simply means that every now and then you will need to remove the fluff to ensure maximum hold.

Washing examples:

If you have approx 12 Nap-Naps you will need to wash every day. Example: 6 for the day, and 6 spare for the next day. If you have approx 18-24 Nap-Naps (most common and easiest choice) you can wash every 2 or 3 days. Example: 6 for the day, 12 in the wash and 6 spare.
